Call to Artist to Design our New Logo!!

Dear Artists,

The White Center Arts Alliance and White Center for the Arts are pleased to announce their merger into White Center’s new arts and cultural organization, White Center Arts.  White Center Arts is being established to bring a strong and more cohesive arts and cultural voice to the White Center area.  White Center Arts is in the process of developing its’ public face, and we need a logo.  We are looking for an image that is simple enough to translate into black and white, memorable, and meaningful. 

We know that White Center is on the verge of really great things.  We want a logo that reflects this greatness, and the beautiful diversity represented here.  We have discussed the idea of a crow as our mascot.  They are incredibly clever, they are survivors, have great memories and are an icon unto themselves. We also have admired the CDA's ribbon circle designed by graphic designer Kathi Wheeler of Noise without Sound.  These could be incorporated as the perch/nest the crow sits on perhaps? Colorful Nest:  stability, support, plus diversity. Though not traditional rainbow colors, but more earthy colors...  We are not married to the idea of the rainbow ribbons, but see how it could be used in our logo somehow.  (Maybe the ends of the ribbons in its’ mouth?) These are just thoughts.  We are open to other design images, keeping our mission, and an understanding of White Center, in mind.

White Center Arts  mission  is to  promote and maintain a dynamic and diverse arts and cultural environment in and for the greater White Center community.

We will need a couple of different versions of your logo.  They need to be formatted for business cards, letterhead, and web-ready in small and large format, etc.  If you are an artist with little graphic design experience, but a strong vision, we can work with that.  Please let us know in your submission.

White Center Arts is offering what we know is a small stipend of $100.00.  We hope that what we plan to offer to the artist community will be the rest of the incentive to help us create a strong, hope- and confidence-inspiring public face.

The deadline is September 30, 2011 at 5:00 PM.  Please email your submissions to whitecenterartwalk@gmail.com.  If you have any questions, or have a hard copy to submit and want to know how, that is the email address to use, as well.

Well worth a visit for a pastry and a peek see.

Café Rozella (9434 Delridge Way SW): Nancy Rich- Mixed Media- Celestial flow with and earthy base. Fitting for the worldly feel of Café Rozella. Stop by for some warm ambiance, delicious coffee, and sinuous art. Re-run from last month.

Dzul Tattoo (9622-B 16th Ave SW): The Dzul Family – Tattoo, airbrush, cool urban art. Check out the shop, get that long-desired tattoo!

The Company (9608 16th SW): Group Show – oil, acrylic, encaustic, illustration. Eight artists work graces the walls of this fine establishment, new to the Art Walk. The perfect spot for a scrumptious cocktail, out of this world noshes and some rock and roll! Did we mention the GORGEOUS artwork??

3.14 (9602 16th Ave SW): Robin Jordan-Oil on Canvas. Jacob Lawrence would be proud- Figurative, African, expressionist paintings that keep the eye moving. Come on in for a coffee and a look around, very family-friendly.

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave Sw): Angelina Villalobos- 179– Illustrations. www.onesevennine.com- Native art meets Art Nouveau meets bold-graphic-lined interpretations of awesome. I can’t stop flipping through the images. The world has delivered us the perfect trifecta: Full Tilt Ice Cream, Beer and Angelina.

Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Dave Bloomfield- STARHEADBOY- Mixed Media. http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/dave-bloomfield.html . Always a crowd pleaser, fun-Fun-FUN pieces that make you feel floaty and free. Creatures from a happy land invade your eyeballs. Stop by for a pint of Winter Warmer and float upstairs for some darts, Atari and Starheadboy. You will not be disappointed.

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW)-Aaron Loidhamer- Hand carved wood/lino-block prints, acrylic ink on paper- A variety of different print styles on found paper. Stop by- drool on top of the Ham&Egg pizza (with arugula), and absorb Aaron’s work. This will be a flash-back from last month for those that missed it.

Uncle Mike’s BBQ- (9640 16th Ave SW)- Pop in to see their house artwork. Don’t forget to taste the Pulled Pork Sammich- it’s delicious!

Marty Gordon - collage. Thruogh his art, Marty is asing questions, inviting debate and telling stories. Looking at one of his works is akin to piiking through a window into another world, a world where art, humor, faith, tension, and candidness life together in vignesstes of surreal commentary.

Artist Statement for Richard Olmstead

Richard Olmstead is showing this month at Full Tilt. Here is his artist statement:

Artist statement from richard olmstead:

I drink unhealthy amounts of coffee and spend too much time alone with a pencil. I find myself a great deal more concerned with the aesthetics of the physical world, than that confined by a frame or held hostage in a museum. We need look no further than these polluted pastures and seas of gray to be reminded why I’m not interested in discussion or depiction so much as in fighting for those whose voices we choose to ignore, and I’d give up any canvas in a heartbeat to draw instead upon the rubble of empires.

I’m influenced by authors and criminals, strangers and friends, by so many people in passing along my travels. I am influenced by every honest smile that was more than good salesmanship.

I’m influenced in a rather different way by rubber bullets and pepper spray. By the police who I’ve watched beat up my friends. I’m influenced by the polluted air, the tainted water, and the dwindling biodiversity. I’m influenced by the developers who are cutting down my back yard, the businessmen that systematically steal the worlds resources, the management that robs our creative energy, and the stress filled dissociative social environment they have left us with, and I think it’s about time that the fucking lines are drawn. - Richard Olmsted,

Salvadorean Bakery: Cullen Bryan: pen, pencil, and charcoal drawings. Cullen is a senior at TEC on the Evergreen High Campus. He is a prolific and very talented artist. The current selection is comprised of the best of his depictions of professional wrestling. A must see exhibition.

Dubsea Coffee: Jameson Hubbard: Wood Block Prints.

Bird Eating Deer is the umbrella alias of the various artistic undertakings of Jameson Hubbard. Currently living in Seattle, WA, Jameson loosely attends the Gage Academy of Art. Primary interests regarding subject matter: The age-old question of man’s relationship with nature and the consequent friction; the role of animals in contemporary and past societies and the meanings applied to them; native cultures, primarily precolonial.

Join us Saturday evening from 7-9 pm to welcome Jameson Hubbard’s new work into Dubsea Coffee and meet the artist himself! His large scale wood block prints, along with drawings and paintings will grace the walls from mid-April through mid-May. Looking forward to Saturday!

February Art Walk is our First Anniversary Celebration!

The last month and a half have been very busy, and we're sorry for letting things slide. Very exciting news to share: February's White Center Third Saturday Art Walk, which is happening on February 20th from 6 PM until 9 PM, will be White Center for the Arts' one year anniversary!



Stay tuned for the artist list in the next few days!! And, we are adding a new venue.



Also, here is a letter that you should read. If you support community arts in White Center, please consider these words:

"Dear Lovers of Art in White Center,

White Center for the Arts (WCFTA) believes that the White Center community’s rich tapestry of culture and local arts should be shared with everyone. Our work to establish a permanent home for the arts in the neighborhood is off to a great start! In the past six months we:

· Established an after-school art program in the local Highline District Middle and High School

· Established the Third Saturday Art Walk, exhibiting more than 25 local artists in 9 months time.

· Are hosting Community Artists Meetings to open the lines of communication

· Established a working relationship with local, county, and state arts organizations and continue to identify and foster new partnerships within the community to create a web of services and support for artists and youth.

· Partnered with the YWCA at Greenbridge to showcase local artists in the lobby on a quarterly basis, and are working with Youth Media Institute and the Highline School District to implement non-violent extracurricular creative youth activities in the schools and in the White Center Downtown Business District.

But we have more work to do, and we are in urgent need of your support so that we can create the anchor of our vision and visiability, DREAM Community Gallery. We are asking for a small donation of $10.00 from 100 people, a $15.00 donation from 55 people, and 10 $100.00 donations. You will be supporting the entire White Center Cultural Community, helping to give visibility to local artists in all media, ages, and neighborhoods. A gift right now will assure that WCFTA can continue on our mission to be a catalyst for the coming together of the arts and cultural community of White Center. The time has come for a permanent home for the arts in White Center. Our current projects are:

· DREAM, a Community Gallery sustained by an in-house Coffee House, providing un-juried exhibition space for local artists and performers, and providing a safe gathering place, and empowering activities, for youth

· Development of our arts education programming

· Collection of oral histories and artifacts for a permanent local history collection

· Facilitating cross medium and cross cultural collaborations, and continuing to bring positive business to White Center through the Art Walk

We appreciate gifts of any amount, and in return WCFTA is working hard to promote art and culture in the daily life of White Center residents. We are to receive a $5,000 grant. We need more to open our Community Gallery by February 20^th, the first anniversary of White Center for the Arts. We have scheduled two dance performances, a musician, and two artists for the evening of February 20^th, and they are counting on your gift to help make this happen. When combined with the work of our dedicated volunteers, established, emerging, and students artists, the community as a whole will benefit from seeing our mission to bring art, and the celebration of culture and heritage to all of White Center and its neighbors, succeed.

Community Artist Meeting in December!

Dubsea Coffee will be the site of our next Community Artist meeting, which is open to artists of all medium, experience and age in the Greater White Center area, and to anyone interested in cultivating the arts here in White Center.

The last meeting was enlightening and productive. There is a great community of arts supporters here. When we come together, we support the work that is vital to a healthy community.

The goal is to break down the barriers that create a feeling of isolation within the community.

What, as an artist, do you need from the community in order to further your creative goals?

What, as a member of the community, can you give, no matter how small?

What would you like to see in White Center that would help you feel validated as an artist, or part of a healthy, diverse community?

Too much to think about? We also just want to have a good time talking and laughing! Come see what's up in White Center...
