It always feels a bit like precious moments meets the dark side or sweet, sweet love meets reality. Swing by to see one of my all time favorite Seattle artists. She never fails to blow your mind.

The core to his approach to creating has always been constant. Starting from a simple concept, drawing or doodle, he sets out to create a narrative that explores the light and dark sides of imaginary worlds. Liking to a mystery, his characters occupy landscapes that are both familiar and unknown where the viewer must explore to gather further meaning."

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): James Bassett-http://www.jamescbassett.com/sculpture.html- “With my sculpture I seek to create an emotional state (not simply a momentary response, but a true lasting state) in the viewer. I do not necessarily aim to create any specific emotion, merely some response, some communication with the viewer. Art happens at the boundary of chaos, and therefore will always manifest some sort of inner tension, and my interest lies in exploring this state.”

Dzul Tattoo (9622-B 16th Ave SW): Katie & Alex- Black & White Photography. Drop in for funky grooves and an eye-full of new body ink. Updated B&W photos of the newest generation of ink, dripping with permanence. This shop has spirit and enough eye-candy to chew on for days.

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW): Larry “The Front Desk Guy” Seward- He’s all over White Center this month!! Check him out at 3.14 as well! While you are in here you should eat some ice cream, throw some skee ball and have a Big Al Ube Porter- made especially---for you.

Herbal Legends-Medical Marijuana Dispensary (9619 16^th Ave SW): Carlos Aguilar & Dave Ryan- http://carlosgaguilar.com/works/- Urban Paintings. Love.His.Art. Carlos does detailed, whimsical paintings; fun characters in random settings. His work is amusing and playful but not slapped together. This guy has a tight reign on the quality of application. Multiple layers of texture for a 3-d feeling full of funhouses. Pop in for some music, a snack and some raw, unadulterated talent; this kids got gusto. Dave Ryan has some seriously awesome stenciling work that is applied directly (not indirectly) to some old vinyl. Love that.

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW)- Greg McCorkle-Photography-Greg McCorkle was very active documenting Occupy Movements in Seattle and Olympia in 2011. He will be sharing 13 images from his travels at Proletariat Pizza. He is quoted in the West Seattle Herald saying,

““As a child of the 60’s I remember the anti-war movement and (the Occupy Movement) began to remind me of how that began and how it grew into a full-on movement where it wasn’t just disenfranchised kids … it was families, the middle-aged, the elderly,” he said. “Everyone is affected by this economic meltdown that we are in the middle of and they are getting angry and they want some change.”

We have high hopes for this folks. Local artists have taken their smattering of old roller skates and turned them into works of art. Come on down to be a part of the newest installation in White Center. Fun would be an understatement.

Call for Artists!

White Center Arts is continuing the call to artists for dynamic roller skate sculptures. Let your imagination ROLL WILD! Our first round this past summer was very successful, and there is some amazing art hung up at the rink. There's plenty of room on the walls, and hundreds of skates just waiting for you and your ideas to be a permanent part of the Southgate Roller Rink in White Center.

Sculpture Criteria and Instructions:

- Max out your design at 4' wide x 2' tall
- Utilize up to (5) pairs or (10) skates
- Make it wall mountable
- Like the Native Americans with the Buffalo hunt, include as much of the roller skate as possible (ie; the boot, truck and wheels). A surplus of clay wheels are also available for use.
- Sculptures must be completed by May 9th
- Participation fee is $20 which covers skates, hanging and promotion of the May 3rd Saturday Art Walk.

The roller rink will play host to a fundraiser benefiting WCA on May 16th which will serve as an early unveiling of the art work before the Art Walk on May 19th.

3.14 (9602 16th Ave SW): Larry Seward- Intricate line drawings that are reminiscent of tribal knots with Nordic roots. He takes his time creating well balanced compositions that keep your eye dodging around the piece until you realize you’ve already done four laps. Also- Pie on a stick….need I say more.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Alina Gridley- Alina Gridley is a Burien-area artist who works in fused glass and metal clay. About a year ago Alina added printmaking to her repertoire creating linocuts and silkscreenings. Most of her work is based on her own photographs and reflects her love of nature and Pacific Northwest.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Tracey Peterson- Tracey was born and raised in Grays Harbor: Aberdeen, Wynoochee Valley and Lake Quinault. These places influenced her visual style with their wet, dark days. She taught herself to use a camera in the Arctic in the early 90's, and has been experimenting with the digital medium for the last several years.

This month seems to be themed towards PARTY MONTH. Seriously. There is going to be three different locations that are rockin kegs and art. How could you not want to come out for that? EddieGuyver and his birthday party at Big Al Brewing, Herban Legends and their always-rockin Art Walks and The Forge: Fire Pits Gone Wild. Really people. Come out even though it’s cold and damp and have a rockin’ good time in White Center. Where we are all currently living the dream.

3.14 (9602 16th Ave SW): Larry the Front Desk Guy (Sorry, Larry- I never heard back on what your last name is)- Ink on Paper: Intricate drawings with a tribal feel, these pieces pull you into a vortex of mazes. Small and intimate you have to get in close to really get a feel for what’s going on. Kind of like the cinnamon rolls, which you should eat and then tell me all about.

Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Margaret Brown- Oil on Canvas: Margaret has created a series of paintings devoted to one black leather jacket. It is cohesive, thick, raw and reminiscent of suspended auto-parts. She definitely has a strong grasp of color and has explored different compositions to highlight them effectively. Stop by Big Al, drink a Winter Warmer or the Local Hero #11 (Stout) and get your art on. I recommend playing some darts and yelling at each other as well. In case you are normally in the hood- it’s local favorite bartender EddieGuyvers birthday and there will also be a smidgen of stand-up comedy goin down. Don’t miss it!

Company (9608 16th SW): Rafael Carraballo-Oil on Canvas: Rafael and his pomegranates are sticking around for another month. If you haven’t made it in to check out his playful compositions, you should. It is well worth it. Plus you could put a glass of rye in your belly. We all know you want to do that.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Sarah Browning- Paper Stacking: Bold, chunky graphics that “explore themes of survival an nurturance”. Sarah layers different pieces of cut paper in such a way that the resulting image almost jumps off the page to punch you in the face (in a nice way… people… seriously. This is art) Sadly, there will not be an opening reception the night of the art walk but it will be up all month. Try and stop by to check it out. You will not be disappointed.

Dzul Tattoo (9622-B 16th Ave SW): Katie & Alex- Black & White Photography. Drop in for funky grooves and an eye-full of new body ink. Updated B&W photos of the newest generation of ink, dripping with permanence. This shop has spirit and enough eye-candy to chew on for days.

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW): Sydney Smith- Photography: Landscape photography that’s not just black and white, if you know what I’m saying. I’m pretty sure that if you grabbed a scoop of Memphis King and played some skee ball, your soul would not be offended.

Herbal Legends-Medical Marijuana Dispensary- (9619 16th Ave SW): Featuring -Carlos Aguilar and other awesome artists- http://carlosgaguilar.com/works/-Urban Paintings: This guy seriously rocks that spot. Fancy, bright colored creatures that jump off the page with an enthusiasm that can hardly be matched. Most of his work is playful and bold with a tight use of color and an epic usage of the house-people. Stop by to party it up as these guys. There will be an artist reception- I’m talkin’ bout beer and snacks people. Let’s get together and do it the White Center Way.

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW)- Zach Bohnenkamp “Matamuros”- Graphic Paintings: You’ve already seen his work spread out over White Center. He’s the proud artist of both the mural on the side of the New Angkor Market (98^th and 16^th) as well as the produce market on Delridge right by the CDA. Now is your opportunity to see some of the pieces you can buy right off the wall. Zach executes well thought out compositions with bold chunky lines. He doesn’t shy away from color either, which is more than OK in my book. Pop in for a slice a pizza and some arts.

Salvadorean Bakery (1719 SW Roxbury): Grace Rajendran- Watercolors on Paper: Playful pieces that host a variety of subjects. Grace manages to put a smile on your face with her whimsical use of subject and color. Combine that with a papusa and you have a guarantee of a good time.

Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Brandon Baker- www.narboo.blogspot.com. Acrylic on Canvas and Wood. NARBOO! This is some of the funnest work around. Bright colored creatures with a distinct sense of humor. You may have seen some of his pieces around town. Fun, bandaged creatures that are pasted in random places for your viewing pleasure-this man knows how to bring it! Come take a peek at his creations and grab a delicious pint of Big Al Fresh Hop Harvest Ale; it will make you warm and fuzzy, just like Narboo Art.

Company (9608 16th SW): Rafael Carraballo- http://www.rafaelcaraballoart.com/ -Oil on Canvas. If I could pick keywords pertaining to his work I would go with women and pomegranates. Hereto forth referred to as W&P. The colors in his work reflect the heavy influence of Spanish culture and art that he spoke of when I met up with him. While he is of Puerto Rican descent he’s found a strong connection to Spain that he continues to delve into and explore. Some of the ‘P’ has taken on an almost heart-like depiction in some of his paintings that creates a sincere juxtaposition from female to object. While the ‘W’ have an almost claymation feel to them. Some of his work is very reminiscent of Frida Kahlos work. You should definitely stop by and visit his pieces. If you can’t make it during art walk come on a Sunday and experience their awesome Sunday night dinners. Worlds-will-be-rocked.

Deanna started her photography career in the Philippines when she was in high school. After a long stint of art stagnation, she’s back and she’s bold. Her ability to tell a story through her photographs is unwavering and keeps your eye coming back. Stop by Dubsea and soak up the awesome art display!

Tim’s compositions are usually overflowing with energy; Abstracted-Awesome-All-Over-You.

October Art Walk - This Saturday!

Hello Friends!

This Saturday is the 3rd Saturday Art Walk - October Edition. Southgate Skate Rink opened up in April of this year. They have been slowing - but surely - transforming the Skate Rink into a really awesome place to hang out - and hang art.

They have commissioned Saingbey Woodtor to create a custom mural inspired by White Center for their West Wall of the rink. White Center Arts asked artists to create sculptures from the hundreds of old skates in the basement of the rink! Saturday will be the be unveil.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the Rink, the Art and White Center!

Call to Artist to Design our New Logo!!

Dear Artists,

The White Center Arts Alliance and White Center for the Arts are pleased to announce their merger into White Center’s new arts and cultural organization, White Center Arts. White Center Arts is being established to bring a strong and more cohesive arts and cultural voice to the White Center area. White Center Arts is in the process of developing its’ public face, and we need a logo. We are looking for an image that is simple enough to translate into black and white, memorable, and meaningful.

We know that White Center is on the verge of really great things. We want a logo that reflects this greatness, and the beautiful diversity represented here. We have discussed the idea of a crow as our mascot. They are incredibly clever, they are survivors, have great memories and are an icon unto themselves. We also have admired the CDA's ribbon circle designed by graphic designer Kathi Wheeler of Noise without Sound. These could be incorporated as the perch/nest the crow sits on perhaps? Colorful Nest: stability, support, plus diversity. Though not traditional rainbow colors, but more earthy colors... We are not married to the idea of the rainbow ribbons, but see how it could be used in our logo somehow. (Maybe the ends of the ribbons in its’ mouth?) These are just thoughts. We are open to other design images, keeping our mission, and an understanding of White Center, in mind.

White Center Arts mission is to promote and maintain a dynamic and diverse arts and cultural environment in and for the greater White Center community.

We will need a couple of different versions of your logo. They need to be formatted for business cards, letterhead, and web-ready in small and large format, etc. If you are an artist with little graphic design experience, but a strong vision, we can work with that. Please let us know in your submission.

White Center Arts is offering what we know is a small stipend of $100.00. We hope that what we plan to offer to the artist community will be the rest of the incentive to help us create a strong, hope- and confidence-inspiring public face.

Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Mantisart-Andrew Miller-http://mantisart.wordpress.com- Mixed Media. I continue to be amazed by what this man puts into the universe. Miller makes all types of art: illustration, paintings, films and hand painted photographs.. Not having seen his films I can easily say his hand painted photos are my all time favorite. He creates multi-dimensional, thick, raw textured photographs by layering and scratching away paint from the surface of his prints. Sometimes they take on an almost dream-like-familiar-feeling that pulls you into a place you may have (never?) been before. His ability to take you on a journey you weren’t sure planned for is one of the reasons I always enjoy his work. It’s a big slice of magic for your unsuspecting eye. Come grab a pint of Lowman Brau (where partial proceeds go towards the WC food bank-DRINK! So other people can eat!), tour the Mantisart experience and grab a seat in the courtyard. You’ll be rockin out with ALL MIXED UP an 80’s flash-back-to-your-favorite-parts cover band!

Company (9608 16th SW): Private Collection- Mixed Media. I always get a surge of excitement in my backbone when I walk into Company after an art rotation. They take their art as serious as they take their Sunday night dinners (a new concoction every Sunday that even your mom couldn’t pull off) This month the art will be a surprise for us all. So keep your panties where people can’t see them- this one’s gonna be a doozie.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Naomi Cox of Spill Studio-http://www.spillstudio.com/blog/-Illustration and Design. Cox has gathered up a collection of fresh sketches to share with Dubsea Coffee's guests and the White Center community. Keeping her sketchbook handy, Naomi creates art inspired by everyday life — favorite Seattle spots, food, family and bright bits of nature. Pen sketches come to life with added touches of watercolor, gouache and colored pencil. Stop by and visit her work while sucking down some of White Centers best coffee.

Salvadorean Bakery (1719 SW Roxbury): Chau Dang- http://ltdspace.net/- Catchy Cartoons- If you missed Chau at Proletariat last month, we have good news! Her quirky sense of humor will be all over Salvadorean Bakery this month. Stop by for one of their mouth watering breakfasts and have a good chuckle cuz this little lady knows how to bring the funnies.

Café Rozella (9434 Delridge Way SW): Sidewalk Sale! 4pm-7pm. Come support White Center Arts by bringing home lightly used goodies for your homestead. There will be a community rummage sale in front of Rozellas to help raise funding for a fantastic arts organization thats focused on keeping the arts in fabulous White Center. Hope to see you there!

Proletariat Pizza – (9622-A 16th Ave SW)- Saingbey Woodtor – www.glossyblack.org -Design & Illustration- Bold-lined illustrations that have a fluid, organic nature about them. His creations are clean, well thought out and manage to keep your eye freely flowing over the entirety of the image. Ranging from black & white to bold, unrelenting color, Saingbey promises to deliver a show that will keep your both your eyes and mind fulfilled. Come check him out and kiss the new Proletariat delivery bicycle on your way in. That thing is dead-sexy!

Herban Legends (Medical Marijuana Dispensary)- (9619 16th Ave SW)- Group Show!- Larry ‘the front desk guy’ is putting together a real treat this month. In honor of our Live Performance month, Larry will be hosting a “Culture with a Kick- Boxed Wine Tasting”. Some of you may be nay sayers (my fridge states otherwise) about the boxed wine epidemic, here is your chance to be pleasantly surprised. It will not be poured out of a basketball (some of your favorite NBA players used to put the wine bladder in an old b-ball so it wasn’t open for public view and they could have some refreshing Franzia on the court) but it will be accompanied by Live Painters and bitchin’ tunes. This DJ has yet to dissapoint. Come on in after 7:30 and appreciate all the finer things in life (Well some of ‘em at least). And Larry? You are so much more than ‘the front desk guy’ and we know it. One day we will even get your beautiful art into White Center proper.

3.14 Bakery- (9602 16th Ave SW)- The Kevin Helmick Experience-

After playing drums in the americana project John Olive then playing keyboard and saxophone in funky groove project Roxbury Pound, Kevin has neglected performing some of his most intimate and thoughtful songs he's written over the last few years. Having at one time fronted for the band 'Drizzle', Kevin's guitar and vocals have since been hidden from public view as he performs in a variety of bands such as Fire All Lasers!, Katy Reichlin, and GoGo Sugar on large stages around the northwest. This performance is a rare occasion to see one of Seattle's premier musician's most closely held works.

Big Al Brewing-(9832 14th Avenue SW)- All Mixed Up!- ‘Contagious popular music from the 80’s’. These guys are bringing it back old school. Music that makes you want to gel your hair, don a white shoulder-padded jacket, fold up your sleeves and tight roll your pants. Come shake your goods with the cars tribute band that will knock your pushed down socks off. They’ll be hitting the stage at 6:30. I suggest a pitcher of Irish Red. No- seriously, it’s delicious.

Full Tilt- Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW)- Rats in the Grass- These peeps bring a level of awesome to every show that is unnatural. Their band currently consists of Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Banjo and Fiddle HOW COULD THAT NOT EXCITE YOU!? Come have a pint of ice cream and a pint of beer while you tap your feet to some seriously happy tunes.

August Art Walk Call for Live Performance Artists

Dear Artists & Art Lovers,

White Center Arts and the White Center Art Walk would like to invite you to participate in our 3rd Saturday Art Walk on August 20, 2011 from 6pm - 9pm. Our art walk has been growing at a fast and furious pace in the past two months, and we feel the excitement building. In June, we curated a Mini Short Film Festival with three unique programs shown at Full Tilt, Southgate Skate Rink and Big Al Brewery. Just this past weekend, we curated live painters at 3.14 Bakery, Big Al's and the sidewalks of 16th Ave SW to great and enthusiastic response.

For August, our theme is Live Performance. We are putting a call out to dancers, dance troupes, spoken word artists, live painters, street performers and musicians. There are many great spaces to accommodate any and all types of performance art in White Center. We have space at 3.14 Bakery, Company Bar, Full Tilt, Big Al's, Southgate Skate Rink, Triangle Pub, Sidewalks and Crosswalks and more!

Once we get artists commitments, we will create a schedule with times and locations.

Still excited after last months film festival?! That’s what we wanted to hear. Now put all of that excitement into our Live Painting Extravaganza! We are bringing you 13+ local artists who will be making their magic on the streets of White Center! Add to that -the fun vibrations of Jubilee Days and you have a recipe for Awesome! Come watch talented artists put their passion on canvas. If you have ever looked at a piece of art and wondered ‘How DO they DO that??’. White Center Art Walk has the answer- and it’s not 42…

Big Al Brewing & Herban Legends will both be hosting groups of artists at their locations. Herban Legends will have nude body painting crafted by local muralist Ryan Henry Ward. If you haven’t seen some of his organic work, you are missing out. These ladies always end up so freakin cute you want to hug them…but you can’t…because they are covered in paint.

**Big Al Brewing (9832 14th Avenue SW): Maggie Schneider- www.maggieschneider.com- Local multi-media artist that has done oodles to help promote the local art scene, Maggie’s range is all over the board. She recently did a project capturing urban wall spaces. She has also been known to create urban wall spaces herself. We are excited to see what genre of work she brings to brighten Big Al Brewing, not that they need it; have you had the Lowman Brau!?

Company (9608 16th SW): Corianton Hale- www.sleepop.com -Graphic Design- Company is not messin’ around this month. They are hosting an entire weekend of fantastic. All month the graphic design work of Corianton will rock your ever-lusting memory. Actually, some of it may even be planted in your memory since Corianton has made oodles of your favorite ‘Stranger’ covers. Come in, eat some wings and rock your heart out. They open at noon for this particular Saturday; they are that serious about it.

If you need to fill your musical heart this weekend Company is hosting: Conniption Fits, The Blue Ribbon Boys, Steel Tigers of Death & Full Tilts very own Justin- showcasing his skilz with the musics! Come drink and rock at the same time.

Dubsea (9910 8th Ave SW): Bellevue College- Class of ’10 - Photography— Shoot to Show – Water + Interesting Images- Sadly, Dubsea won’t be open for this art walk but they will be showcasing the photography from the 2010 graduating class at Bellevue College all month. Stop by, have a delicious coffee beverage of your choosing and soak in the snapshots from yesteryear.

Salvadorean Bakery (1719 SW Roxbury): Patricia Ariel- www.patricia-ariel.com- Mixed Media- I wish that words could do Patricia’s work justice but there is no way to convey how magical her pieces are. They have a figurative theme that is layered with bold color; interlaced with a dynamic- art- nouveau-feel Patricia really drives home the words ‘wow’ and ‘I wish I could do that’. We are excited to have her as one of our participating live painters as well! Keep your eyes peeled!

Kopakova is no foreigner to keeping your attention. Subject matter? People…or not…or landscape…or abstract… Wait, what was the question? Have you had a pastry on a stick yet? You should do that. Then write a strongly worded letter about it. Amara will be back again this month- she will also be one of our live painters…Are you getting excited yet??? 3.14 is also hosting music! They will have singer/songwriter Margoux Lesourd for your inner ear excitement.

Full Tilt Ice Cream (9629 16th Ave SW): Dave Ryan-www.blog.shoptastyart.com- Mixed Media- Full Tilt has found its niche with record art. They’re loud, they’re fun, they have graphic images on them, but mostly, they are guaranteed to make you smile. Dave Ryan is coming through with some fun art. It’s totally worth it to pop in and suck down some Ube ice cream while the green walls spin records for you.

These are super-clever and highly entertaining. Simple line drawings with a message that makes you chuckle repeatedly. We all believe that laughing and pizza go together, yes? Yes, we do. That is why you should make it happen. Pizza you can believe in with comics you can laugh at.

Alki Art Fair

The Alki Art Fair will be held July 23 and 24 on Alki Beach in West Seattle. Arts, craft and food vendors will be open from 10 to 6. The music will go until 8:30 pm on Saturday and 7 pm on Sunday. The Loghouse Museum (Seattle Southwest Historical Society) will participate in the fair this year with an exhibit and a fashion show featuring vintage bathing suits to celebrate the centennial of the Alki Bathhouse (1911 - 2011).

Call for Artists! Live Painters Needed for July 16th Art Walk!

Dear Fantastic Local Artists,

We here in White Center are really excited to announce our theme
for our upcoming 3rd Saturday Artwalk. For the month of July, we are
hosting as many local artists as we can for a Live Painting
extravaganza! This will be a great opportunity for you to get out,
meet new faces and make more contacts with our consistently growing
art community.

Last month we hosted a highly successful ‘Mini-Film-Festival’ that
brought us a bunch of new faces. They toured our list of participating
artwalk venues and were treated with 3 different film venues that
showed a wide range of short films. Everyone-had-a-blast. This coming
month we are hoping to do something similar while highlighting some of
our favorite local live painters. We HOPE this is you.

We are looking for a wide range of artists that are willing to
paint at one of our participating venues. The artwalk takes place July
16th, from 6-9pm. Participators are asked to show around 5:30pm to
setup. We are happy to provide drop-cloths if you don’t have one and
will make an effort to rustle up an easel if need be.

I would categorize this as Organic & Industrial. Well executed and clean. Amanda rips, alters, sews, paints
and combines found objects. Metal, wood, canvas, paint, and other randoms are manipulated into bold, chunky and meaty representations of temptation. Are we all logged on? Because there’s freaking delicious coffee to go with it. Don’t miss this and if you do, don’t tell your mom because she WILL put you in time out.

If you’ve never run into Daves’ work around town, I’d be highly surprised. I’m pretty sure there may be more than one of him since he’s at any and all of the fun festivals and still manages to hang his artwork at a smattering of Seattle venues. Stenciled-Vinyl-Records with all the images you love to laugh at, hug & dance with. The Dude? On a record? In his bathrobe? Yes, please.

Artist statement from richard olmstead:

I drink unhealthy amounts of coffee and spend too much time alone with a pencil. I find myself a great deal more concerned with the aesthetics of the physical world, than that confined by a frame or held hostage in a museum. We need look no further than these polluted pastures and seas of gray to be reminded why I’m not interested in discussion or depiction so much as in fighting for those whose voices we choose to ignore, and I’d give up any canvas in a heartbeat to draw instead upon the rubble of empires.

I’m influenced by authors and criminals, strangers and friends, by so many people in passing along my travels. I am influenced by every honest smile that was more than good salesmanship.

I’m influenced in a rather different way by rubber bullets and pepper spray. By the police who I’ve watched beat up my friends. I’m influenced by the polluted air, the tainted water, and the dwindling biodiversity. I’m influenced by the developers who are cutting down my back yard, the businessmen that systematically steal the worlds resources, the management that robs our creative energy, and the stress filled dissociative social environment they have left us with, and I think it’s about time that the fucking lines are drawn. - Richard Olmsted,

Bird Eating Deer is the umbrella alias of the various artistic undertakings of Jameson Hubbard. Currently living in Seattle, WA, Jameson loosely attends the Gage Academy of Art. Primary interests regarding subject matter: The age-old question of man’s relationship with nature and the consequent friction; the role of animals in contemporary and past societies and the meanings applied to them; native cultures, primarily precolonial.

February Art Walk is our First Anniversary Celebration!

The last month and a half have been very busy, and we're sorry for letting things slide. Very exciting news to share: February's White Center Third Saturday Art Walk, which is happening on February 20th from 6 PM until 9 PM, will be White Center for the Arts' one year anniversary!

Stay tuned for the artist list in the next few days!! And, we are adding a new venue.

Also, here is a letter that you should read. If you support community arts in White Center, please consider these words:

"Dear Lovers of Art in White Center,

White Center for the Arts (WCFTA) believes that the White Center community’s rich tapestry of culture and local arts should be shared with everyone. Our work to establish a permanent home for the arts in the neighborhood is off to a great start! In the past six months we:

· Established an after-school art program in the local Highline District Middle and High School

· Established the Third Saturday Art Walk, exhibiting more than 25 local artists in 9 months time.

· Are hosting Community Artists Meetings to open the lines of communication

· Established a working relationship with local, county, and state arts organizations and continue to identify and foster new partnerships within the community to create a web of services and support for artists and youth.

· Partnered with the YWCA at Greenbridge to showcase local artists in the lobby on a quarterly basis, and are working with Youth Media Institute and the Highline School District to implement non-violent extracurricular creative youth activities in the schools and in the White Center Downtown Business District.

But we have more work to do, and we are in urgent need of your support so that we can create the anchor of our vision and visiability, DREAM Community Gallery. We are asking for a small donation of $10.00 from 100 people, a $15.00 donation from 55 people, and 10 $100.00 donations. You will be supporting the entire White Center Cultural Community, helping to give visibility to local artists in all media, ages, and neighborhoods. A gift right now will assure that WCFTA can continue on our mission to be a catalyst for the coming together of the arts and cultural community of White Center. The time has come for a permanent home for the arts in White Center. Our current projects are:

· DREAM, a Community Gallery sustained by an in-house Coffee House, providing un-juried exhibition space for local artists and performers, and providing a safe gathering place, and empowering activities, for youth

· Development of our arts education programming

· Collection of oral histories and artifacts for a permanent local history collection

· Facilitating cross medium and cross cultural collaborations, and continuing to bring positive business to White Center through the Art Walk

We appreciate gifts of any amount, and in return WCFTA is working hard to promote art and culture in the daily life of White Center residents. We are to receive a $5,000 grant. We need more to open our Community Gallery by February 20^th, the first anniversary of White Center for the Arts. We have scheduled two dance performances, a musician, and two artists for the evening of February 20^th, and they are counting on your gift to help make this happen. When combined with the work of our dedicated volunteers, established, emerging, and students artists, the community as a whole will benefit from seeing our mission to bring art, and the celebration of culture and heritage to all of White Center and its neighbors, succeed.

Dubsea Coffee will be the site of our next Community Artist meeting, which is open to artists of all medium, experience and age in the Greater White Center area, and to anyone interested in cultivating the arts here in White Center.

The last meeting was enlightening and productive. There is a great community of arts supporters here. When we come together, we support the work that is vital to a healthy community.

The goal is to break down the barriers that create a feeling of isolation within the community.

What, as an artist, do you need from the community in order to further your creative goals?

What, as a member of the community, can you give, no matter how small?

What would you like to see in White Center that would help you feel validated as an artist, or part of a healthy, diverse community?

Who is invited? Artists who live in and those who love the GREATER White Center Area/ Unincorporated King County, and a little bit outside that line. That means ALL artists. Music, dance, film, theatre, visual, 3-D, photography, written, mixed-media, young, old, in-between, student, emerging, established, etc.

What is this about? This is about creating your opportunities. What do you want/need from your community in order to further your work/goals? What can you give to your community to help strengthen it? White Center for the Arts is opening the line of communication. This is not a formal, stuffy meeting, but the first meeting of many where your voice can be heard, new alliances can be created, and we can figure out how to best accommodate you, the artist, in our own neighborhood.
